The first time I ever experienced Journey, I was completely taken with it. The music, the artistic play, the story that truly seemed to be written by you as you played… It’s all so fantastic, and I was mesmerized, feeling like I was in a dream…!
And then, I found my very first fellow player, another with a cloak like mine, except it was white, golden etchings running all along its exterior. At that moment, I had no idea the importance of the white cloaks, how it symbolized someone who had gone through their own journey many a time over, having perhaps reaching some form of euphoric zen through it all. Truly, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case, but - at first - they didn’t even notice me… At first, as we traversed through the sand and went about our business, freeing cloth creatures from their cages and building bridges one powerful call at a time, it seemed I was invisible. For a while, I though I was…
That is, until we both sat to see our second vision, and their head turned, and - in that moment, at 4 o’clock in the morning - it felt like there was someone looking at me. Truly looking at me. Like, the type of gaze that someone gives another when trying to find their soul… and in that moment, before the vision began and it all went white, I felt honestly connected to a complete stranger, that I couldn’t even say hello to…
It was awe-inspiring.
Then, as we proceeded through our hardships, through the sands and the slopes, through finding living handkerchiefs trapped away and practically flying beside them, as we soared into what appeared to be the sea and snuck past malevolent beasts of metal and violence - tiny voices chirping in fear and soothing - this complete and utter stranger I knew I’d never even hear a word from became my guide… and my shoulder to rest on when scared of what was going to happen next.
But, there was one instance above all others where this person truly astounded me, a moment where everything seemed to suddenly disappear, everything leaving in the blink of an eye, to the point where I thought I’d be lost forever, alone, so close to the end…
…when I fell.
We were traversing through the wind and snow of the high peaks of the mountain. Our ribbons upon our hoods had already grown desperately short, and our bodies were crusted in cold, thick frost. We had been battered by the wind and haunted by the monsters that roamed ominously over the deceased pieces of their brethren. We had climbed so high, over stairs and rock, and as we finally reached the end, the dormant cloth bridge that he so easily glided across… I slipped.
I was suddenly plummeting - surprisingly far - down to the bottom of the cliff again. Down to the first stones that hid us tightly behind their backs as intervals of wind blew strong and fast through the snow-covered chasm, but not quite that far.
When I stopped, I had landed on a random outcropping of rock and snow, panicked by the fall (and by the possibility that I had now reached somewhere I could not escape from) and incredibly lost. I just started to turn and pace on the rock I landed on, too low to jump back up, too high to really get a good view, too small a space to see where I could go. I started to sound as hard as I could, but the winds carried away my little chirps, my calls of desperation, and one gust blew me from my rock, and tumbled me further down, like a leaf out of control in a storm… I landed harshly and was now even more lost, just starting to walk forward, trying to, but the further I walked, the whiter it got. I started to panic even more… Could I never get free? I turned around and tried to find some marker of where I was, but couldn’t see anything! I chirped again and again, holding my breath and letting out as loud a cry I could, watching my voice reach as high as it could, and… nothing.
That is… until they floated down from above. The white-cloaked figure, calmly soaring into view, and I couldn’t help but feel my heart skip a beat and race in relief. They came down soft beside me, and then walked to my side, the two of us warming each other and chirping. I swear, to this day, they somehow knew I was terrified, and were trying to soothe me.
So, once our ribbons of incantations were regrown and my heartbeat had settled, I gave a little chorus of chirps free to let them know I was calm again, and they nodded, then turned, and led the way, back through the chasm I had found myself, out through a small passage, and back to the tombstone-like rocks jutting out of the snow. Together, we made it all the way back through the snow and wind, through the horror of the beast flying above us, and up the stairs. We made it back to that bridge, the two of us soaring over it together, and then, together, we walked through the gates, and to the final step of the journey.
Never will I forget how they had saved me, how they had come to find me, to comfort and guide me back to the light. And never will I know their name or face. Never will I thank them…
And that’s the beauty of Journey. That’s it.
The beauty, the true beauty, is not in what one sees or how one traverses their journey… but the humanity behind the mask of anonymity. The beauty of a stranger.
That’s what my first journey taught me…
…How about yours?
I first began traveling with this person/wanderer when I was fixing the bridges, I saw the light on the side of my screen and figured I would go see the person. After this we began fixing the bridges and I decided I would lead them around to find the different symbols around the game. The most prominent memory of this Journey was the ending bit, we were going through the snowy temple/city and I was seen by one of the Stone Serpents. Having been attacked and having my scarf ripped I was lucky to land right near the exit from the “hide and don’t get caught” bit of this chapter. I turned to wait for my traveling companion only to hear a few seconds later the rumbling of the Serpent.
I chirped and waited to see Reto re-orientating him/herself and walk towards the exit and to regroup. After having made it to the part where we both collapse in the snow and fly up to the flat where the light is, I tried to write in the snow to Reto, not skilled with snow writing at all I stopped trying. Only to find out at the end the name of my friend whom I had gone through the entire game with. If he/she ever finds this story I hope that they will remember the marking/symbol i had for my name. The symbol was and upside down looking staircase to the left with pillars to the right on top and a right side up staircase to the right with pillars on the left. :D
It was fun adventuring with this person. In the many journey playthroughs I have done, you were the best travel companion I have ever met. It was an honor to play Journey with you.
Nobody really explores the ChapterSelect gltich because you only can go in there alone, no Companions around yet, but it is worth to have a look around in there :D … and you can play with Nick, the AI you see at the end of the hallway before you enter the broken bridge level :D

Hello! Yes, if you’d like to send in headcanons, I’ll happily post them here. I’m glad you’ve discovered the beauty of Journey, and I hope you get to have your own playthrough someday. :D
I really love Journey, I played a lot, and I have the white coat. Then, my best friend came over and played with my game. Naturally, she had the white coat, but she didn’t know how to play. I didn’t tell her anything, letting her discover this awesome game. At the very beginning, she met another white coat. She started chirping after them, and they began to follow each other. The other player must have seen then that my best friend wasn’t as experimented than her cloak let on. But still, the other player stayed and helped her all the way through. They showed her where were the lights, where to go, they waited for her when she fell…My best friend grew very attached to the other player but she feared they would grow bored and leave. But they never did, and were always there for her. At the end, when they died, she was almost in tears. At the last level, she didn’t know how to fly well and she lost sight of her friend. She did all the level alone, for the first time. She didn’t enjoy this level because she kept thinking about her friend, and she was really sad. She reached the mountain at the end and then, she saw them. The other player was waiting for her to finish the game. She looked at me with the biggest smile I ever seen and then, she saw how the game finished. She was really confused and said: ”That’s it? You reach the end and reincarnate? Then what’s the point?” I told her: ”Well you see, what’s important in a journey isn’t necessarily the destination…”, she said: ”…it’s the people you meet along the way?” and then she broke down crying for like, half an hour.
That’s how thatgamecompany forum members say hello when they meet in Journey :D
just hilarious :D :D
Hi there! Of course I’d be happy to credit you. I just went back and found the post, and added ‘submitted by nimtzart' to the description. Thanks so much for your submission! :)
This is just a experience that happened to me in the game.
It was my first time playing, I had been switching partners for the most part and was feeling lonely (they either ran, quit, I lost them etc..) then I got to the pink desert, instead of following the carpets I just played around the dunes. I had somehow ended back up to the starting point and was going to start goofing off again when I saw a journeyer (not very far off) so I started chirping like a mad man and ran right up to them. (they were a first timer like me) Since I wanted to be friendly I just ran around in circles around them making quick little chirps, but they just made a single one and started to walk off.
I didn’t follow since I didn’t think they wanted me too (I don’t know why) but before getting to far they came back and made another chirp and started walking again. So I was following them, chirping frequently and flying around while they just trekked along following where the carpets had gone. we took turns releasing them, in fact they had gone they would wait for me to do one and vice versa. at one point when we noticed a glyph (the one that comes flying down), and I got it before them, so while waiting for my partner to get it I landed in the window frame beneath it. they got the glyph and started to look for me (I could tell because they were looking around the bottom and running in a repeated circle) so I chirped a few times, and I noticed the head of my partner look up.
they started flying up, I really didn’t know what they wanted since he had already gotten the glyph so I jumped down. My partner kept jumping, then it hit me they must want to get into the window. It was so funny, they would try to land but fall out the other side and emit some very quick chirps. I was already back up and sitting down waiting for them to get up. Sure enough they managed to get up, and we just sat/stood their for a few moments.
With a single chirp from my partner they jumped down, and I followed suit. we continued along, me chirping happily and they remaining silent something uttering one small chirp like they were saying “yeah, just don’t run off” or something like that
when we reached the stone I lit rushed ahead and lit up one side of the stones and waited. I was trying to be nice again, they watched and after I didn’t make a move for the other stone they lit up the rest.
then came the sliding, I was having tons of fun, but I think I caused them some grief because they were chirping loudly whenever I would take a different route than them.
we reached the bottom and took turns releasing the carpets, and went up to the drop off. we both stood there, then we both somehow managed to jump at the same time. That was my first time experiencing that part, I thought it wouldn’t last long like the other. Oh man was that fun, we didn’t stop even at the part where it lets you stop for a moment to regroup with your partner.
they were chirping slightly more frequently, I was chirping the normal amount. When it all ended and we both fell down, all I could see from him was a flurry of chirps, they even started to run around me while doing it. after the two of us chirped more and ran around like giddy school girls, we both started to slowly fall into silence like when you just finished laughing so hard, and you need a break. I broke the silence with the quietest chirp since I started, they did the same, and we both walked towards the statue each of us taking a side and lighting up the stones.
it was when we were standing on the first break of light, they were chirping more and running around it, but my dad had just came through the door along with my sister.
they wanted to watch tv and with much protest and anger I tried to ask for more time, but in the end I had no choice. I picked up the controller, feeling so empty (this might sound over dramatic, but I had grown very attached) and I walked up lightly tapping the circle button. they started to run off, but when I didn’t follow they came right back chirping while standing in front of me. I really wish their was a button to say good bye, but I think they got it. I moved slightly closer and sat down chirping once more before doing so, I felt so guilty. they remained silent for a few moments, and did something that made me feel slightly better. they chirped very quietly and sat down, my dad and sister weren’t finished yet so I decided to leave the my wanderer sitting there. When the time came to quit, I found that they hadn’t left.
I saved and quit off.
sadly I didn’t figure out who I had shared this journey with, since I was new and started a new game (it didn’t feel right to continue after that, I felt like that journey had ended). (I was mad at myself when I realized they tell you the names of the people you played with) they also never messaged me, but I wasn’t really mad. They were my silent partner after all and could’ve been in the same predicament.
since I didn’t want to forget them I made two characters
Dusty - me (because I feel on my face a lot in game and thus my coat was always dusty)
Noi - my partner (kinda a joke noise without the se so it would be no-oi )
^_^ this journey even inspired me to make a story for them still in progress
so at least this story has a sort of happy ending
My story is quite simple. After going through the game two or three times with a few fellow red cloaks with more patterns than me, showing me the one or other secret, I had made it my personal journey to help fellow newcomers by showing them the way and the secrets I was shown, successfully bringing about four or five different newbies to the end. But I realized I was still missing out a few glyphs so I decided to jump ahead to avoid finding anyone and waste their time looking for those secrets. Needless to say I felt frustrated looking for them, especially the Tower secrets and when I noticed a companion light, I quickly activated the ‘floating water’ to jump ahead, mostly ‘cause I didn’t want to waste anyone’s time or patience. I kept looking, certain that whoever it was was gone since no light appeared again.
After some time, I was upset for not knowing where to look and exactly when I thought “Where the darn hell is it?”, the companion light reappeared just below me. Curious, I went to look who it was and to my surprise, it was a White Cloak. And a very advanced at that! I greeted them with a few happy chirps and they responded, which made me quite happy since the first White Cloak I met wasn’t into companionship and the second I lost track when my connection died.
But what was more intriguing was that they seemed to know exactly what I was looking as as soon as I activated the light, they jumped off and moved ahead, chirping constantly before stopping and waiting, always chiming. I decided to follow and that’s when they showed me what I was looking for; the glyph hidden in the whale’s room as well as a glowing one behind one of the curtains. After that, they went further up, me always close behind and when they activated the next glyph to make the light ascend and the squids appear, they suddenly jumped off and disappeared. I tried to follow, but I just couldn’t find them.
Right when I was about to give up, I heard them chirping down below so I started to drop as well when I found them with a small creature swimming around. My companion chirped happily to what I understood “This is what I wanted to show you” and I received a trophy afterwards. Messing around with the creature, we then decided to go back up and activate the history, but not after going through the missing scarf glyphs my companion had missed.
We moved over to the snow area where my companion showed immense patience with me. Since I jumped ahead, my scarf wasn’t as long so I could not fly as long as them, always falling behind. But they would always wait for me even when I didn’t chime to them. Once reaching the guardian area, we were attacked the very moment we entered. The guardian found my companion because of me… feeling guilty, I decided to share their fate and both our scarves got torn… I thought they would be upset and abandon me since I couldn’t see them, but after a few steps, I saw them chirping and was glad they came looking for me.
After that, my companion showed me the last missing glyph hidden in a cave, allowing me to complete my history trophy. Wanting to thank them, I showed a little secret I found while helping a newbie, namely going close to the wall, thus avoiding the guardians. It worked well the first three times, so I felt confident it would work again. Big mistake. The guardian spotted us and once again went after my companion instead of me, although I was ahead of them. Once again decided to share their fate and eat some snow after being tossed high up into the air.
At the narrow passage, my companion suddenly jumped ahead, flying off and I desperately began to chirp my heart out, not wanting to be left alone. I thought they were angry for my mistake, but when I reached the opening, I saw them waiting for me, also chirping. The rest of the journey we kept staying close together and once we reached the Glowing Passage, we started to fool around, flying and chirping and playing in mid-sky, always showing the other our whereabouts. It was amazing to say the least!
At the very top, we fooled a little more, singing to our heart’s content and as a thank you, I decided to draw a heart around my companion, which I did. They stood in the middle and I walked a heart around them, chirping happily once I was done. I think they understood the message as they too chirped along. We then made our way into the light, always singing, going side by side.
I have successfully conquered several journeys towards the mountain, always finding different people along the way, some helpful, some extremely patient, others, well… But in all journeys I have done so far, this one was definitely one of the most markable ones. Thank you for everything, White Cloak aka chumsy5. Thanks to you, I became a White Cloak as well and feel ready to truly help newcomers find their way on their Journeys. You were an amazing companion and I hope our paths’ll cross again sometime! Thank you.
