Perhaps it doesn’t quite fit this blog, but this is my school performing I Was Born For This =)
One thing that gets me every time is the music. It doesn’t matter whether I’m playing it myself, watching a playthrough, or even just listening to the soundtrack. There are just so many bits that just make me hold my breath and I get shivers through my spine.
I’ve decided to start watching a playthrough on YouTube and already, despite the videoer talking all over the top of the music, I still had goosebumps.
One of my most favourite parts is the sudden silence in The Call, when you see your Wayfarer waking up in the sand. Each time I know exactly when the music will cut off, but it always leaves me with a sense of awe. Something’s out there, and it’s calling out to me to find it.
My favourite track is The Road of Trials, since it always makes me feel light on my feet and I want to dance. Images of the shining sands run through my head and I feel as if I’m the one surfing on the dunes and chirping to scarf friends all around me.
Apotheosis is another winner, when the violins pick up and we’re flying on the last leg of the journey towards the mountain top. I always remember the joy I feel flying and chirping to my heart’s content with a companion racing beside me.
I Was Born for This often makes me cry. Its quiet nature pushes me to reflect the Journey I’ve taken, and remembering the motif of the shooting star flying down the mountain makes me even more excited to take the Journey again.
Thank you so much Austin Wintory, thanks for being good friends with thatgamecompany and hope to enjoy more of your masterpieces in future projects!
I have seen a couple more recordings of this event floating around Youtube but I think this one might have the best audio quality.
(Mod: Thanks so much for sending this in! What a beautiful performance! I had actually seen this before ages ago, but somehow forgot all about it. I really appreciate you bringing it back to my attention.)
EDIT: This is NOT Lisbeth Scott — it’s a singer by the name of
Laura Intravia. Thank you to artemis-devotee for pointing this out, and sorry about the error!
I’m sure we all love Austin Wintory’s astonishingly beautiful score for “Journey” - who couldn’t! It’s absolutely mesmerizing. Playing it yourself may be a bit difficult though if you’re not doing things by ear, as there aren’t any easily obtainable official sheets for it around.
However, there is some work done by fans. It’s not much, but here are some links that may be useful to all the musical Journeyers out there!

An arrangement of ‘Nascence’ and ‘Road of Trials’ performed by the Ludwig Orchestra. Isn’t that melody so wonderfully Gershwin-esque when played on brass?
A new piano cover of the song “I was born for This”!
Our costume was featured in an amazing tribute video for the Journey(game) and composer Austin Wintory!
Super cool that we were able to be a part of something so amazing!
Thank you to Landon Donoho and Taylor Davis for giving us this fantastic opportunity!
Full score of Journey (game) by Austin Wintory with text commentary
“I am not trying to force people to feel a certain way, because for me that should be a cardinal sin. My job is to reveal to them something that they already know so I regard being a composer as being more like a mirror than a dictator,” he adds. “You already had whatever that beautiful experience you are trying to communicate and attribute to me was already there. That’s the whole point. Storytelling is actually revealing what’s inside. That’s the fundamental reason I do what I do.”
An INCREDIBLE Journey medley on piano by Youtube user ThePandaTooth. It ends with the first known cover of Apotheosis. A truly breathtaking piece that I am now desperate to learn!
